On the 23 November 2018 ICCS-NTUA hosted an ERIGrid workshop entitled “Advanced power system testing using Hardware in the Loop simulation” in Athens (GR). The event was attended by 50 participants from academia, research institutes and industry from 12 European countries.
Key features of Controller Hardware in the Loop (CHIL) and Power Hardware in the Loop (PHIL) simulation were explained, along with a variety of applications that demonstrate the benefits of using the HIL method for advanced power system testing.
The presentations from the workshop are available below:
– Welcome and introduction to NTUA activities, Prof. George Korres
– CHIL and PHIL simulation: key features and applications, Panos Kotsampopoulos
– HIL testing of adaptive protection in distribution grids, Vasilis Kleftakis
– DER inverter development and testing using HIL simulation, Athanasios Vasilakis
– Voltage control in distribution networks with high DER integration: HIL experiences, Panos Kotsampopoulos
– Islanding detection and seamless transition through operation modes in microgrids: HIL experiences, Christina Papadimitriou
– Distributed control applications using Virtual Power Plants, Iasonas Kouveliotis-Lysikatos
Moreover, a live laboratory demonstration of CHIL and PHIL experiments was performed which included 5 different applications:
• CHIL testing of DER inverter controls
• PHIL testing of DER inverter anti-islanding protection
• Combined Control-HIL and Power-HIL testing of coordinated voltage controller
• CHIL testing of adaptive protection system for distribution grids
• Virtual Power Plant laboratory platform using Multi Agent Systems
The laboratory setups used at the demonstration are described at the following presentation:
